Rocket Strikes Kirkuk Airport in Iraq, One Injury Reported
The incident occurred around 11:30 p.m. local time (2030 GMT), with two of the rockets hitting the military zone of the airport and one landing in the civilian section, according to the airport’s administration.
A fire, ignited by the blast near a gate close to the military area, was quickly brought under control by the airport’s fire crew.
Fortunately, there was no damage to the airport’s runway or infrastructure. The airport confirmed, “All airport components remain fully operational.”
In response to the attack, Kirkuk Operations Command deployed security forces to secure the area. The forces assured that there was no immediate danger and confirmed that the attack would not interfere with flight schedules.
Earlier, an Iraqi security source reported that two rockets had targeted Kirkuk Airbase and a nearby civilian home, but there were no casualties or property damage. media quoted the source, saying, “One rocket fell between the first and second runways of Kirkuk Airbase,” and “The other struck a home in the Al-Orouba neighborhood in Kirkuk province.”
Both rockets were identified as Katyusha projectiles. No group has taken responsibility for the assault so far.
