New international truck transport system starts in Istanbul
The announcement came from Türkiye’s Transport and Infrastructure Minister, who explained that trucks departing from Türkiye will be monitored as they travel overland through Iraq and Kuwait, eventually reaching Jordan. This route forms the initial phase of the Development Road Initiative—a major infrastructure project aimed at enhancing regional trade connectivity.
The Development Road, an ambitious trade corridor, is designed to link Türkiye and Iraq through a network of highways, railways, ports, and urban centers. A key feature of the project is a 1,200-kilometer (745-mile) rail and road network that will connect to Iraq’s Great Faw Port, which is expected to become the Middle East’s largest seaport.
This initiative also aims to establish the Iraqi Silk Road, offering an alternative to the Suez Canal and enabling faster, more streamlined trade between East and West.
“This is a trial run for the Development Road. We are undertaking the initial project to keep the corridors active. We will track the trucks leaving Türkiye,” the minister stated, underscoring the launch as the beginning of a long-term strategic effort.
Representing Iraq, a senior advisor to the prime minister on transportation issues expressed full backing for the Development Road, emphasizing the vision of uniting East and West through their region. “We support the Development Road in its entirety and congratulate Türkiye. This is the first step, and we are looking forward to the next steps.”
A top official from the UN Economic Commission for Europe (UNECE) hailed the launch as a success for the forum, emphasizing the goal of transforming borders into connections.
Meanwhile, the secretary general of the International Road Transport Union (IRU) highlighted the importance of the system for Iraq, noting that it will help Iraqi goods reach global markets more efficiently and securely.
